Why Did I Become a Pediatric Dentist in Carlsbad?

At least once a day, I am asked, “Why did you become a pediatric dentist?” and the simple answer is, to give children a more positive experience, so that when they are adults, they do not fear the dentist, or neglect their oral health.

Here is my story:

The more complex answer stems from my own experiences as a child. At the age of three, I was diagnosed with a serious-life threatening infection in the blood. I went through months of treatment, and when all was said and done, I made it out unscathed, almost.

The combination of medications, dry mouth, lack of hygiene, and a poor immune system wreaked havoc on my mouth, and I was left with severe rampant decay. The humiliation of smiling or laughing with teeth that looked as frayed as mine was intolerable. I would cover my mouth to speak, so that other kids might not notice. I spent much of my childhood in fear, until I met the dentist. Rather than a place of anxiety, and dread, the dentist meant hope, and optimism for a brighter smile. I went through full mouth rehabilitation, and while it was no easy feat, there was no more freeing feeling than to be a child who can smile uninhibitedly. It is why I have known since grade school that I wanted to become a Pediatric Dentist, and why I am so passionate about working with children.
