Safer materials for healthier smiles.
As your child’s healthcare advocate, it is my duty to ensure that the materials I utilize in treating your child or teen benefit not only the mouth, but also their body as a whole. As an active member of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology, I have spent numerous hours attending courses and researching the effects of materials used in Dentistry, and their effects on the body.
Why we choose to be a Mercury-Free Pediatric Dentistry Practice?
At the Brush Stop Pediatric Dentistry in Carlsbad, we are mindful of the treatments we offer and materials we use in order to work in harmony with your child and teen’s development. It is why I have made the personal choice as a practitioner to provide a Mercury-Free environment when treating patients.
Silver fillings, otherwise known as amalgam fillings, contain over 50% mercury, along with other elements such as silver, copper and tin. Mercury is released in trace amounts through expansion and contraction while eating and drinking different types of food. This can also cause the enamel surrounding the filling to flex, and cause the tooth to crack.
This is the reason my patients are treated with safer, more biocompatible materials that have been shown to withstand the forces around a developing mouth without the potentially harmful effects or toxicity of mercury.
In addition to not placing mercury fillings, we are also quite particular in the ways we remove these fillings as well. We use special masks, and offer children an Oxygen nasal hood so that they are not inhaling the fumes released when removing the amalgam. Our treatment rooms are equipped with specific ventilation and our chairs are built to capture mercury particles.
Some materials you will find in our office include essential oils and aromatherapy in treatment rooms to help relax patients undergoing treatment, BPA-free composite & sealants and zirconia crowns. We also offer remineralization techniques that are an alternative to fluoride, for those who prefer fluoride free treatment. These are all options I am more than happy to discuss with parents.
